CHAPTER 29

Hamma felt herself being pushed along the ground, her robes making a rustling sound as she moved. There were other sounds, too—more scraping and shuffling, massive lungs breathing deeply, and a faint buzzing, like an alarm.

It was that last sound that had woken her.

She opened her eyes and saw that she was lying on her back, being pushed over the ground toward the entrance to the Gaoler’s lair. The buzzing sound continued, but the harder she tried to pinpoint its source, the fainter it became. As the sound faded, a feeling of paranoia or of being watched took its place.

Her Sense Harm ability! It must have tried to wake her while she’d been unconscious. She hadn’t known it could do that and decided to say a few extra prayers of gratitude to Uru after all this was over.

Hamma tried to assess the situation before she gave away the fact that she was awake, but she couldn’t see much from her position, so she checked her map.

The frogs, Minos, and Skeeter were all near Hamma, being swept along by the Gaoler’s tail toward the entrance to his lair, which was about fifty feet away. Archie and the foxes were stationary in the center of the room, probably asleep, too. Ickles seemed to have disappeared completely, and Lylan was still hanging from the Gaoler’s claws. Lylan’s dot had turned red again, and Hamma’s color wasn’t looking much better.

They must not have been out for long, since Hamma’s Mana still hadn’t refilled completely. She only had about six hundred at the moment and used half of that to channel Uru’s Breath on herself and Lylan. A major heal was really what was needed, but Hamma had to wake the others and she’d need Mana for that.

Hamma figured that if Sense Harm had been able to wake her from sleep, something similar might work on the others. She used her remaining three-hundred Mana and cast Fear Ward, her area of effect fear spell. It wouldn’t cause an alarm sound, but it might scare them enough to rouse.

Hamma leaped to her feet and swung her staff at the Gaoler’s head, hoping to distract him and give the others time to recover their senses. If they woke at all, that is. The Gaoler hissed and tried to swat her with his tail, but she’d been ready for that and was able to roll over it.

She checked his stats.

Name: Bosky Gaoler Tortoise

Health: 2,103

Mana: 1,699

Energy: 386

The darts still appeared to be draining his Energy, and all his casting had wiped out the majority of his Mana. Still, he could do a lot of damage with his remaining sixteen-hundred Mana.

Minos recovered the fastest, then set itself the task of running from person to person and slapping them across the face with its branches.

She channeled Fever at the highest power available to her, lowering the Gaoler’s body temperature by fifteen degrees. His movements and reactions seemed to slow a bit, but since he’d already been pretty slow moving, she didn’t think the spell was worth the cost and dismissed it.
